Company Introduction
The Business
The Group (comprising the Company and its subsidiaries) is principally engaged
in the development and operation of tourism-related activities in the PRC. The
Group currently owns and operates the following Attractions: -
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium ("SOA"), which is one of the largest indoor,
closed-system aquariums in the world and the largest ocean aquarium in Shanghai;
Lintong Lixing Cable Car ("LLC") which operates a cable car service to ferry
visitors from the base of Lishan Mountain to mid-mountain (where CYG is
situated). LLC will become an integral part of CYG when the latter is
completed; and
Chao Yuan Ge scenic area ("CYG") (currently under development and expected to
be completed in 1Q06), which will be a historical and cultural theme park
showcasing reconstructed replicas of some of the major buildings within the Hua
Qing Palace (of the Tang Dynasty) at their original sites and display relics
unearthed from the CYG site.
SOA, which commenced operations in February 2002, is the major revenue
contributor of the Group. It contributed 97.4% of Group revenue in FY2002.
SOA is located in the Lujiazui Finance & Trade zone within Pudong New Area,
Shanghai. It directly faces The Bund from across the Huangpu River. SOA is
situated close to other popular tourist destinations such as the Oriental Pearl
TV Tower and the Jin Mao Building which are within walking distance from SOA.
Together, they form a cluster of tourist attractions in the vicinity. SOA is
thus, able to tap into the flow of visitors to these attractions and have joint
marketing programs with these attractions.
Built to international standard with a designed capacity of 21,000 visitors a
day, the 5-level aquarium has a built-up area of 20,000sq m. It features
underwater viewing tunnels with combined length of 155m (one of the longest in
the world).
SOA’s only direct competitor in Shanghai is Chang Feng Ocean World, a smaller
aquarium which is situated in the western suburbs of Shanghai (about 10km from
The Bund).
The primary target market of SOA is derived from (1) Shanghai, (2) neighboring
Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces and (3) the rest of China while the secondary
target market comprises foreign visitors visiting Shanghai.
